Fraud and Spam Filters

What is spam?
Spam is a popular term for junk or unsolicited e-mail messages.

Interesting spam facts:
  • Approximately 62% of all mail is Spam
  • For Swirbo clients, approximately 76% of their mail is Spam
  • Spam cost U.S. businesses $10 billion in 2003
  • The typical spammer can send one million emails for $25

How much does spam cost you?
The easiest way to calculate the cost of spam is by estimating the time it takes for an average employee to check their mail, differentiate spam from non-spam, and then delete the non-spam. Note that as a spam problem increases, so does the likelihood for a good email to possibly be deleted incorrectly - so make note of how severe your spam problem is. Once you estimate the time associated to spam for an average employee, you can then factor that across your entire employee pool.

Note: There are many other costs associated with spam, but they are more difficult to calculate. Spam takes up precious bandwidth, processing power of your email server, storage space, and yield legal risks to your organization depending on the spam message contents.

Malicious File Protection

What is a virus?

A virus is a self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents. They can be malicious or not, but they are a nuisance at best and an extreme danger at worst.

Virus Statistics

  • The Melissa virus cost the US Economy $1.2 billion, which pales in comparison with the Love Bug, which caused over $8.7 billion in damages.
  • 84 percent of virus infections result in up to 20 work days lost, 50 hours for recovery, and costs an organization on average, $10,000. Companies also report losing up to 70 percent productivity during a virus attack and losing up to 40 percent of data after the fact.
  • Trend Micro Inc., the world's third-largest anti-virus software maker, said computer virus attacks cost global businesses an estimated $55 billion in damages in 2003, a sum that would rise this year.

Swirbo's Virus Fighting

Swirbo's anti-virus functionality currently protects against over 25,000 forms of viruses -- including the recently released (and very revolutionary) JPEG comment vulnerability -- and its virus definitions are updated every hour. Instead of relying on client-side software, which can be faulty or left out-of-date, Swirbo protects your PCs from viruses by quarantining and deleting viruses before they even enter your network, and is able to react to the latest threats instantly.
